Electrical Code Requirements
The Pikes Peak Regional Building Department enforces the 2026 National Electrical Code throughout Colorado Springs, Monument, Fountain, Manitou Springs, Palmer Lake, Woodland Park, and unincorporated El Paso County.
A few of the main code changes over the last 30 – 40 years that apply directly to any electrical project include:
Expanded AFCI requirements: Apply to all circuits in finished spaces except for the bathroom, attic, and garage.
Expanded GFCI requirements: Apply to receptacles in bathrooms, kitchens, basements, unfinished areas, and outside the home. As well as 240V receptacles in the kitchen, laundry, and garage.
Whole-Home surge protection and Emergency Disconnect: Required for new service installations and service upgrades performed during a remodel.
Tamper resistant receptacles: Required in all new and replacement receptacle locations in dwelling units.

Our Process
Assessment
We discuss the full scope of your project, evaluate your electrical system, review your project plans, and identify what’s needed.
Permitting
We handle the permit process with the Pikes Peak Regional Building Department so everything is done by the book.
Rough-In
We run cables through walls and ceilings, install electrical boxes, and pull wire back to the panel. This work happens before insulation and drywall go in and will be inspected before walls close.
Trim
After painting, we install receptacles, switches, fixtures, and cover plates, then make final connections at the panel. Everything gets tested before we call for final inspection.
Final Inspection
The building department inspects the completed installation for code compliance. Documented, inspected work protects your property value and prevents headaches when you sell. We aim to pass the first time, every time.
Electrical Remodel FAQs
Does every remodel require a panel upgrade?
No. Many smaller remodel projects can be done without a panel upgrade. Larger projects like whole home rewiring, basement finishing, or kitchen remodels are the most likely to need one.
Does remodel electrical work require permits?
Yes, and we handle pulling the permit as well as scheduling inspections as part of the job.
What triggers AFCI requirements?
Modifying any wiring in bedrooms, living rooms, kitchens, and similar spaces will trigger the requirement for AFCI protection.
How long does the electrical portion of a remodel take?
It depends on scope. A bathroom remodel typically requires 1 to 2 days of electrical work across both phases. Basement finishes and kitchen remodels can run a week or more for rough-in, plus additional time for finish work.
Will my power be off during the work?
Only circuits being actively worked on are shut off for safety. Whole-house shutdowns are brief and only needed for panel connections. We’ll communicate any planned outages in advance.
